This shallow, clear, freshwater lake is lesser known than the neighboring Great Lakes, but is an exceptional spot for sportfishing and a true angler’s paradise. Discover a myriad of fish species, including bluegill sunfish, largemouth bass, yellow perch, crappie, catfish, musky, walleye, sturgeon, and many more. When it comes to getting around, book a local charter, try your luck at kayak fishing, or cast from the shore–you can’t go wrong. Popular spots on the lake include Sturgeon Hole, The Channels, St. Clair Shores, Anchor Bay, and Mitchell Bay, just to name a few.
With gorgeous natural scenery and crystal clear waters, the Great Lakes Flats are lauded as a freshwater version of the Caribbean and guaranteed to put you in the island spirit. These shallow shoals of the northern Great Lakes provide a sanctuary for carp, northern pike, and smallmouth bass. With hundreds of miles of flats and shoreline, anglers in these parts love the solitude and other-worldly feel of these gorgeous waters–don’t miss checking this one off your bucket list.
If you’re headed out for a day on the water, there are a number of fantastic spots nearby to fish or drop anchor and explore for a while. Sometimes referred to as America’s “all natural” theme park, visitors enjoy Mackinac Island for its quaint allure–from the untouched Victorian era archetecture, to museums, parks, historical carriage tours, and the no-motor-vehicle policy. Harsen’s Island is another popular hot spot for anglers while providing a gorgeous backdrop for swimming, relaxing, or grabbing a bite to eat.
With something for every member of the family to enjoy, Lake St. Clair Metro Park is an oasis for a day of fun and recreation on both land and water. Try your luck at windsurfing or kiteboarding, or grab your towel and head over to splash in the lake or Olympic-sized pool. If you’re looking to break a sweat, the paved trail is perfect for biking, jogging, and in-line skating. During the winter months, try your luck at ice fishing, get your heart pumping with some cross country skiing, or lace up your skates for the perfect cold weather outing with your crew.
