Shark Tooth Island

Every week is Shark Week when you venture out to this fascinating island on the Cape Fear River. During the colonial era, this area was teeming with boats and tradesmen transporting and exchanging goods. Today the area is a goldmine for fossils, artifacts, and, of course, shark teeth. Visitors can comb through sand, grass, and along the rocky shoreline to try their luck discovering treasure of their own. The best time to search is during low tide, especially in the fall months. Using an experienced local guide is highly recommended by those unfamiliar with the currents of the river.

Wassaw Sound & Wassaws Island

A popular spot for fishing, kayaking, and hanging out on the beach, this beautiful stretch of land and sea along the upper Georgia coast is definitely worth a visit. The Wassaw Island Wildlife Refuge preserves over 10,000 acres of salt marsh and coastal forest. The oceanside of the island is open to for public hiking, with miles of deserted beaches to explore. Camping is not allowed here, but if you’re looking to plan an overnight outing, be sure to check out the nearby Little Tybee Island.

Tybee Island

Only 20 minutes from Savannah, this enchanting barrier island off the coast of Georgia has been a popular getaway spot since the late 1800s. History buffs will appreciate a visit to Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse– dating back to 1736–or an afternoon exploring the Fort Polaski National Monument, a notable landmark from the Civil War. Outdoor lovers can go on guided kayak tours or venture out on their own to explore the stunning waterways. The island has plenty of eateries to grab a bite to eat and is ideal for exploring on foot or by bike.

River Street & Savannah Waterfront

For an immersive historical setting that thoughtfully integrates the best of old and new, head to River Street on the gorgeous Savannah Waterfront. With over 75 boutiques, restaurants, galleries, and pubs, this area is teeming with things to do for the whole family. A variety of guided tours will give you a new perspective on an old southern gem via trolley or riverboat. Be sure to leave some time to peruse River Street Market Place, a recreation of open air markets that operated on River Street in the mid 1800s.

Moon River Brewing Company

Located in what they describe as “the oldest, most historic and genuinely haunted buildings in Savannah” Moon River Brewing company has been serving great beer locals and visitors alike since 1999. Built in 1821 as the City Hotel, the space has been everything from a bank, to a post office, to a coal warehouse, and almost everything in between. Today the popular brewing establishment offers a comfortable and relaxing environment for folks to settle in and enjoy delicous food, live events, and of course, a round or two of cold ones.

Tortuga’s Island Grille

Delightfully billed as the place to go for “Southern fare with Caribbean flare,” Tortuga Island Grill is located along the Atlantic Intracoastal Highway in Thunderbolt, Georgia. With lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch service, visitors will love the variety of familiar favorites offered here, as well as some inventive iterations like Caribbean Bruschetta and Mojo Criollo–jerked chicken and Georgia shrimp topped with garlic citrus honey sauce and mint over Caribbean rice.
